Dosalpuri is a traditional Korean shamanic dance whose name means "the untying of what has knotted" — performed to release grief and misfortune held in the body. The long white cloth in the dancer's hand traces a curve through the air, as if a burden carried for years were being let go, one fold at a time. Endurance, restraint, and finally release: in a single gesture, the dance distills an emotional arc many Korean women have long carried. Painted in 2007, this work marks the starting point of a study of women the artist has continued for nearly two decades since.
