Seungmu is among the most refined dances in the Korean tradition: a lone performer in a pointed white hood, sleeves unfurling through the air like wings. In his 1939 poem of the same name, the poet Cho Ji-hun described that hood as "folded so gently it flutters like a moth." This painting steps into the instant the poem describes — a single gesture holding both sorrow and rapture at once. For that moment, the dancer stops being a person and becomes pure line.
